EnDyn, Ltd. completed a 3-year project with Ameren Illinois Utilities (AIU) in a multi-million dollar program to replace and update aging engines and compressors in Ameren’s gas storage fields in Southern Illinois.

Ameren, who discovered EnDyn’s capabilities through an internet search, initially contracted EnDyn to overhaul one Superior® engine and compressor in their gas storage fields. Ameren’s gas storage fields are integral to their utility delivery system, enabling AIU to buy and store gas at times during the year when prices are low, as well as providing essential capacity during peak usage periods.

The Superior® equipment was one of three units currently operational at the location. EnDyn provided a complete In-Field Engine and Compressor overhaul and replaced the unit’s control panels with Altronic® safety-shut down controls. Bob Barcum, Ameren’s Supervisor for Southern Gas Storage Operations explained, “EnDyn’s field technicians were there from start to finish rebuilding the compressor on site. What amazed me most was the availability of the parts needed to rebuild the compressor. I was also surprised at the speedy delivery time of getting the parts out to the field.”

Barcum continued, “Although our compressors were small compared to what EnDyn usually builds, they treated us as if we were one of their largest customers. They answered any questions we had on a timely basis and came up with some better ideas for our ignition systems to run the compressors.”

After experiencing how well the Superior® unit performed during the peak winter months, Ameren approached EnDyn again the following year to completely replace their aging second unit. “Their request was to modernize the existing equipment and build up a second package that would be identical to the first,” explained Mark Little, EnDyn’s Ameren project manager. From their Alice, Texas location, EnDyn secured a similar 8G-825/W-64, repackaged it to a zero-hour status from the ground up, and then customized it to make it completely identical to the first unit. “We were in constant communication throughout the process via emails, phone calls, and photographs to ensure that each detail of the unit was an exact match,” said Little.

After completion, EnDyn delivered, installed, and aligned the second unit at the Illinois location to ensure that it would be fully operational in the upcoming winter months.

The next year, Ameren contacted EnDyn to replace their third unit. Again, EnDyn provided a Superior® zero-hour remanufactured package (with a new unit warranty of one year) customized to Ameren’s exact needs. In fact, complete engine and compressor control upgrades using state of the art Altronic® devices were installed to provide additional reliability. After a test-run during the fall to ensure unit capabilities, all three units were operational for the Winter of 2010.

Barcum summarized, “The most important fact for us is that EnDyn has been available for troubleshooting any problem we have had. We have called upon them day or night to help us get back on line, which is very important to our operations. Since our project was completed, we have had no real issues or downtime. EnDyn is great at product support, having parts available when needed, and being able to contact someone to troubleshoot a problem.”
